While pairs are getting eliminated each week, one thing seems to stay the same—host Alfonso Ribeiro calling Shangela by the wrong name! The most recent time he mispronounced her name, calling Shangela “Angela” by mistake, Shangela called him out for it. Surprisingly, Ribeiro actually had a sweet reason for mixing up the name so often. He told Shangela, “Listen, okay… you got me before I got to you. Listen, I know, I wanted to say that in the last couple of weeks, I did actually say your name a couple of times wrong. I did say ‘Angela,’ which is my wife’s name. So it was a term of endearment, you know what I’m saying.” Ribeiro’s wife is Angela Unkrich, and the two have been married since 2012 and have three kids together. Ribeiro also has another child with his ex-wife, Robin Stapler. Luckily for Ribeiro, Shangela didn’t think it was a big deal. She told him, “You know I love you, baby,” before jokingly messing up his name, “I love you baby and you are my Alfondo.” Shangela actually made history this season, as she is the first drag queen to compete. When not in drag, Shangela goes by real name, D.J. Pierce, and uses he/him pronounces, also making Pierce and his partner, Gleb Savchenko, the first same-sex dancing pair in Dancing With The Stars history. Speaking about the experience on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Shangela told the host, “It’s not about just being the first. You’ve got to walk through, you’ve got to represent authentically and fiercely, and then you’ve got to keep that door open for the girls coming behind you.” For Disney+ Night, Shangela and her partner danced to the song “Dig A Little Deeper” from the movie The Princess and the Frog, scoring a 32 from the judges and staying safe until next week.
