“I’m heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family,” wrote Lewis on Friday. “She died as she lived. Since 1990, McCrory had a thriving career on stage. She appeared in over 25 theatrical productions. In 2017, she was was honored with the title Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to drama. Ever prolific, McCrory played the title role in Medea, starred as Lady Macbeth, played Olivia in Twelfth Night and Rosalind in As You Like It. In writing about her work in The Deep Blue Sea at London’s National Theater, Ben Brantley of The New York Times declared “the wondrous Helen McCrory adds yet another memorable portrait to her gallery of devastatingly devastated women.” Author J.K. Rowling tweeted, “I’m devastated to learn of the death of Helen McCrory, an extraordinary actress and a wonderful woman who’s left us far too soon. My deepest condolences to her family, especially her husband and children. Simply heartbreaking news.” In the midst of the pandemic, McCrory and Lewis raised over $1.3 million for Feed NHS.
