In his first address to the UK as king, Charles III said that his son Prince William would be invested as the new Prince of Wales, and that there would be a new Princess of Wales for the first time since that sad night in 1997: William’s wife Kate, formerly the Duchess of Cambridge. Within 10 minutes of the announcement William and Kate had changed their Twitter and Instagram profiles to reflect their new status as the Prince and Princess of Wales. A palace source said that Kate “appreciates the history associated with this role but will understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path.” Charles’ wife Camilla never took the title Princess of Wales because of its association with Diana, even though she was married to the Prince of Wales. Instead, she had the title Duchess of Cornwall, a title that has now also passed to Kate. William is the Duke of Cornwall. As well as inheriting this title from his father, William has also inherited the Duchy of Cornwall, a vast portfolio of property and assets that will supply William and Kate with a private income of tens of millions of dollars a year. The Duchy of Cornwall owns 128,000 acres of land across England and Wales. It is worth over $1 billion and it has made William one of the biggest landowners in the UK. According to the Guardian, the estate is mostly made up of farmland but also comprises “homes and commercial properties, forests, rivers, coastline and about a third of the Dartmoor national park, which was once used for mining minerals such as tin and copper.” William is now first in line to the throne. His nine-year-old son Prince George is second in line, while Princess Charlotte is third and Prince Louis is fourth. Their uncle Prince Harry is now fifth in line to the throne, while his three-year-old son Archie is sixth and his one-year-old daughter Lilibet is seventh. The moment that their great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II died, Archie and Lili became TRH Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.
