On June 8, Pugh attended the Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter ‘22/‘23 fashion show in Rome, Italy alongside other celebrities like Kate Hudson, Ariana DeBose, and of course, Anna Wintour, who sat beside the actor at the show. After showing up in a bright pink sheer dress, which revealed her breasts through the fabric, Pugh faced “loudly abusive” comments criticizing her revealing attire. Proudly posting a few photos of her stunning look from the event on Instagram, Pugh used the caption to give her opinion on the matter, writing a strong message about respect and positive body image. Pugh, who starred in hit films like Midsommar and Black Widow and will soon appear in Don’t Worry Darling, started off the message by saying that she expected the backlash, but also, “I was excited to wear [the dress], not a wink of me was nervous. I wasn’t before, during or even now after.” She continued directly addressing the body-shaming, saying, “What’s been interesting to watch and witness is just how easy it is for men to totally destroy a woman’s body, publicly, proudly, for everyone to see. Pugh then revealed that people have been attacking her about how her body looks and telling her that she should be “embarrassed” about it. But in response, she said, “It makes me wonder what happened to you to be so content on being so loudly upset by the size of my boobs and body..?” The 26-year-old then went on to say that she was “raised to find power in the creases of our body. To be loud about being comfortable.” Because of that, “It has always been my mission in this industry to say ‘fk it and fk that’ whenever anyone expects my body to morph into an opinion of what’s hot or sexually attractive. I wore that dress because I know.” In a final address to the people who attempted to shame her for wearing a slightly revealing dress, Pugh declared, “If being loudly abusive towards women publicly in 2022 is so easy for you, then the answer is that it is you who doesn’t know. Grow up. Respect people. Respect bodies. Respect all women. Respect humans. Life will get a whole lot easier, I promise. And all because of two cute little nipples….” As of writing, the post has over 1.7 million likes and counting, and a variety of celebrities commented on the post in support of Pugh and her message.
