“[Fast and Furious] 9 is kind of the first film of the final chapter,” director JustinLin explained to the Associated Press earlier this month. “We’re kind of reconfiguring everything so that the next two movies should wrap up this amazing journey for these characters.” Star and producer Vin Diesel added, “I know people are going to feel like it doesn’t have to end, but I think all good things should. There are reasons for a finale. I think this franchise has deserved it.” If you can’t wait to find out what may happen to the franchise, keep reading (speed-read if you have to!) to find out more.
When will the Fast and Furious series end?
As Lin and Diesel have confirmed, Fast 10 and Fast 11 are slated to be the franchise’s farewell films. Franchise star TyreseGibson revealed that while shooting has yet to start on either installment, they’re expected to be filmed one right after the other, telling Collider, “It has been confirmed we are going to shoot back-to-back and get both in the can.” Lin has been officially lined up to direct both of those movies, but according to IMDb, the only casting confirmations so far is that Diesel will be back for Fast 10. Of course, the Fast and Furious franchise is about family as much as it’s about cars, so it’s probably safe to assume that the rest of the main cast—including Gibson, Ludacris, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and perhaps even Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren and new F9 star John Cena—will reprise their roles. There are also no official release dates yet for F10 and F11, but Diesel told the AP that he believes those movies could debut in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
Will there be another Hobbs and Shaw?
Then there’s the fate of the franchise’s first spinoff. After the success of Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw in 2019 (the movie, led by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, raked in a whopping $760 million worldwide), a Hobbs and Shaw 2 is currently in development with a screenwriter attached and Johnson back on board to produce and star. However, another producer revealed earlier this year that it might take a while for Hobbs and Shaw 2 to come to fruition. As Kelly McCormick told Collider, “Everybody’s really busy on that particular franchise. I mean, who’s busier than Dwayne Johnson? He’s critical to the project. We’re just waiting to hear, to be honest. I think it’s something that would be awesome to continue, but I think everybody’s just been so busy working on projects in the COVID of it all, that we’re still waiting to hear… There’s a lot of excitement to try to make something.”
Will there be a Fast and Furious spinoff?
As far as other characters from the franchise getting their own films, how about a Fast and Furious film just for the females? Judging from a recent group interview, it seems all of the franchise’s co-stars—men and women alike—agree that the ladies are ready to be doing it for themselves. In fact, Ludacris was the most vocal about it when he said, “The girls need a spinoff. That’s who needs a spinoff. All of the badass, kickass women in this film. That’s who deserves it.”
Will there be a Fast and Furious reboot?
For all his talk about good things coming to an end, Diesel has already left the door open for more Fast and Furious storytelling in the future. “I’m sure that there are people that would love for Fast to continue on and on and on and on. The universe, the Fast universe, will do that, clearly,” he told Vulture recently. “There’ll be different iterations of stories and different story lines that are played out within the future.”
Will Dom die in Fast9?
Not only is Diesel’s character of Dom Toretto in Fast 9 and apparently slated for Fast 10, but Diesel even specifically hinted to Vulture that fans haven’t seen the last of his Fast alter ego, Dom Toretto: “I think the Toretto storyline that they’ve wanted to do can always exist in the future. It’s not something that is completely off the table,” he said. “There is nothing that is off the table.”
