The actor sat down with Howard Stern several years ago to promote his then-upcoming book So That Happened: A Memoir, where they discussed the audition disappointment, but the radio host reposted a clip this week, leading fans to rave over Cryer’s positive attitude. “You auditioned for Friends,” Stern began in the snippet he shared, Cryer confirming, “Yes,” before he continued, “and you didn’t get it, and it’s a heartbreaking story.” Cryer laughed in response as Stern went on. “You put your audition on tape and you mailed it to the people at Friends, right?” “Yes, I was doing a- it’s only heartbreaking to me,” he interrupted himself to switch gears, breaking into laughter again. “No, it’s heartbreaking for me to read it,” Stern disagreed. “The world got Chandler Bing by Matthew Perry, which was, I think, a work of genius. So the world did not get its heart broken. I, however, did.” “But don’t you think you could have been a good Chandler Bing? Honestly,” the interviewer prodded.“I think I could have been a decent one. I don’t think I would have been at the level of Matthew Perry. And on some level—and I talk about this in the book, that when you audition for something and don’t get it, it’s only when you see somebody do it not well that you get mad.” He continued, “I don’t get mad when I see an actor hit it out of the park, it’s like, ‘Well, of course, no wonder they gave it to that guy!’” And he makes a fair point! Rejection is difficult for anyone to handle, but not everyone is able to take a step back and see that sometimes it’s just not the right fit. Cryer’s ability to see the bigger picture and remain positive about the way things worked out really resonated with commenters on Instagram. “Humble response!” one cheered, while another wrote, “Humble and class act. Absolutely love Jon Cryer”. “Never knew this but agree 100% John would have been a great Chandler Bing. 👍,” someone else commented. Others pointed out how wonderful Cryer did after he was later cast on Two and a Half Men, with one commenter saying he was born to play the role of Alan Harper. “He hit it out of the park as Alan,” another agreed. “But Jon Cryer was at the top of his game in his role as Alan Harper aka Zippy 😎,” the love for his portrayal of the character continued.
