Choi’s recovery hasn’t been an easy one and he has been undergoing rehab after having been seriously wounded by a bullet to the chest. He was shot in the season 6 finale by an unhappy patient that Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) treated. The man was delusional and needed his appendix removed, but refused treatment, so when he became unconscious, Archer operated on him against his wishes. The man was so angry because he believed Archer had ruined his life, that he went after the doctor with a gun, but shot Choi instead. Since Archer felt responsible for the shooting, he personally oversaw Choi’s care, but he made some iffy decisions that caused friction with other doctors, who doubted his judgment. In the end, Archer saved Choi’s life, but the injuries were so severe that Choi has to undergo physical therapy before he can return to the ED. Tonight, Choi is back for a visit to the ED, but not returning to work. Chicago Med showrunner Diane Frolovtold TVLine, “We have a couple of episodes devoted to [Choi’s] physical recovery. Then we’ll pursue the emotional and mental recovery.” Also, in the season 6 finale, Choi and April had time to say their goodbyes as she left for training in a prestigious nurse practitioners’ program, getting in thanks to a recommendation from Archer, and the end of that relationship is one more issue Choi will have to deal with upon his return. “He realizes how important it was [for her] to follow her professional dream, to do this,” showrunner Andrew Schneider told TVLine in the same interview as Frolov. “And he’s got so much to recover from, physically and emotionally, from the shooting, which will be part of this season going forward.” In the meantime, Dr. Archer has taken over as the interim chief of the Emergency Department, and it will be interesting to see how Choi and Archer face off when Choi is ready to resume his duties.
